Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) thanks Alabama 1st District candidates Jerry Carl and Bill Hightower for signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. By signing the Pledge, these gentlemen have made the commitment to oppose and vote against any and all tax increases as federal officeholders.

Both Carl and Hightower are running in the Republican primary in Alabama’s 1st congressional district to fill the seat of Rep. Bradley Byrne who is running for the US Senate in 2020. The Cook Political Report rates this seat as “Solid Republican.”

Carl currently serves as the County Commissioner for Mobile Country. Prior to serving as commissioner, Carl dedicated his time to being a successful small business owner. He has started over ten small businesses in his community, ranging in focus from real estate to healthcare.

Hightower served five years in the Alabama State Senate, where he became known as one of the state’s most conservative legislators. Hightower continues to be involved in his local community after his service in the State Senate. He currently serves on the board of Outback America, a Christian organization that holds family camps and retreats in the Mobile area.

The Pledge is offered to every candidate for state and federal office and to all incumbents. Nearly 1,400 elected officials, from state representatives to governors and US Senators, have signed the Pledge.

ATR will continue to follow this race closely and will provide additional updates as more candidates sign the Pledge.
