The national media is currently focused on Kamala Harris’s selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. While pundits debate the impact that Walz’s nomination will have in battleground state contests this November, there is much at stake in the nearer term, next Tuesday to be specific, for residents of one 2024 battleground state, Wisconsin.

Other than two proposed amendments to the Wisconsin constitution, there are no hotly contested statewide races to be decided in the Badger State’s August 13 primary, but voters will cast ballots in state senate and assembly primary contests whose outcome next week that will dictate the makeup of the Wisconsin Legislature for the next two years. The outcome of these races will have major ramifications for Badger state taxpayers for years to come.

The significance of the policy reforms enacted by the GOP-led Wisconsin Assembly and Senate over the past 13 years is unrivaled. Between the Act 10 entitlement reforms that continue to save Wisconsin taxpayers billions every year, the billions in tax relief enacted over the past decade, implementation of Right-to-Work, repeal of prevailing wage mandates that were inflating the cost of taxpayer-funded projects, or regulatory reform, no other state can hold a candle to what has been accomplished in Wisconsin over the past decade when it comes to policy innovation and meaningful reform. The outcome of the August 13 primary contests will play in important role in determining whether Wisconsin can maintain these pro-taxpayer reforms and perhaps build upon them.

Americans for Tax Reform is urging all candidates running in next week’s Wisconsin primary to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to vote against legislation that would impose a net tax hike. Signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge is the best way for candidates running in the August 13 primary to make it clear to Wisconsin taxpayers that they will defend them against efforts to seize more of their hard-earned income. Candidates who sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge will be in good company in making this important commitment to taxpayers. Scott Walker was a Taxpayer Protection Pledge signer during his eight years as governor and 18 sitting governors today are signers of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

As the Wisconsin primary election approaches, ATR will continue to urge candidates for Wisconsin Assembly and Senate to join Speaker Robin Vos, Assembly Majority Leader Tyler August, and host of other leading conservatives in making this important commitment to Wisconsin taxpayers. An updated list of all the candidates running in next week’s primary who have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge will be published here on Monday morning.
