Elizabeth Warren said on Wednesday morning that she agrees with a University of Massachusetts Amherst economist who said that around two million jobs could be lost as a result of Medicare for All being implemented.
Here’s the key exchange:
Reporter: “An economist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst told Kaiser Health News earlier this year that that could result in about two million jobs lost. He said those would be mostly administrative positions — insurers, doctors’ offices — and he said that politicians who want to move toward that system, Medicare for All, have to think about what a ‘just transition’ a ‘fair transition’ would look like. What would that look like for you?”
Warren: “So, I agree. I think this is part of the cost issue, and should be part of a cost plan.”
In addition to the jobs that would be lost due to the imposition of Medicare for All, the proposal requires $32 trillion in tax hikes, which Warren hasn’t quite explained where she’d get that from.
Even Bernie Sanders, the author of the original Medicare for All legislation admits it: “Yeah, [we’d have to] raise taxes on the middle class,” he told a CNN reporter after the July debate.
The issue has gotten Joe Biden fired up as well, telling a crowd in Iowa that “She’s going to raise people’s taxes.” Warren continues to dodge the question, as shown by this comprehensive video timeline of her dodges.
