Re: Support TCJA Extension

Dear Rep. Slotkin,

We, the undersigned state legislators from across Michigan, write to urge that you and your colleagues make permanent extension of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) a top priority for 2025. Expiration of TCJA’s temporary provisions would result in a multi-trillion dollar tax hike on Americans. I urge you to save your constituents from this economic growth-depressing tax hike that will impede job creation by hitting small businesses particularly hard.

Contrary to the false claims from your friends in the Biden White House, the TCJA delivered tremendous relief for low- and middle-income families. In fact, IRS data from 2017 to 2018, the first year the TCJA was in effect, shows that the TCJA reduced the average effective tax rate for every income bracket, but that the greatest relief went to low- and middle-income households who need it the most. In fact, households with an adjusted gross income (AGI) between $40,000 and $50,000 saw an average tax cut of 18.2% in the first year of the TCJA.

There was a boost in economic mobility following implementation of the TCJA, as documented by IRS data. From 2017 to 2018, the number of families with AGI of $25,000 or less fell by more than two million. The number of filers reporting incomes exceeding $25,000, meanwhile, increased. The bracket that saw the biggest post-TCJA increase was the $100,000 to $200,000 bracket, which grew by more than one million households from 2017 to 2018.

While the Biden White House and your Democrat colleagues continue to lie to voters by telling them that the TCJA was a give-away to the rich, IRS data confirms that upper-income households pay a greater share of tax collections after the TCJA than they did before. Contrary to what progressives claim, the TCJA actually made the tax code slightly more progressive.

Extending the TCJA’s expiring provisions before the end of next year is crucial to the economic health of our state and the nation. As such, we urge that you make this a top priority. We thank you for your consideration of this input and urge you to finally stand up for Michigan Taxpayers.
