Republican Study Committee Chairman Kevin Hern (R – Okla.) provided remarks at ATR’s annual Tax Day press conference on April 18.

Hern is a successful small business entrepreneur and knows firsthand the burdens of excessive taxation. His Tax Day remarks are below. Video of his remarks can be viewed here.

“Every year, Tax Day is a reminder of the obligation to the government that we have. In an organized society, citizens pay taxes to their government in exchange for things like military protection and public services. It’s a partnership. We work together.

Americans expect their government to be good stewards of their tax dollars and not take more of their hard earned money than they need.

Today, we are staring down the barrel of a monumental debt disaster and it’s a direct result of the careless spending in our capital. The federal government no longer respects its taxpayers. Under the Biden administration, your tax dollars have been abused and taken for granted. Our debts are piling up at a record pace but Democrats want to keep their foot on the gas.

It’s Tax Day. So yes, we fulfill our obligation to government, but it comes with an opportunity to hold that government accountable for the way they spend our tax dollars. It’s never been more timely than it is today.

In 2017, Congress passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and President Trump signed it into law. Democrats said those tax cuts would ruin our economy, but the opposite happened. Wages grew, investments grew, jobs were created and the United States saw the highest tax revenues in our history all as a result of tax cuts.

The American people are much better stewards of their own money than the federal government. When we give Americans more control over their own money, the economy thrives.

When we disrespect the taxpayer and waste their hard earned money, the economy suffers, inflation rises, the cost to heat your home and put food on your table rises as well. Companies have to lay off employees and cut wages. Does all of that sound very familiar? Like what we are seeing today.

We’ve seen how the economy thrives under pro-growth policies. We’ve seen how the economy suffers under a Democrat spending spree. The facts remain the same: When the government spends more, the American people have less. It’s time to stop the spending, balance our budget and start paying down our debts. Thank you. I want to thank Grover for all he does over at Americans for Tax Reform.”
