Norquist: It’s Time to Pass Conservative, Proven Drug Sentencing Reform

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist provided the following statement in support of Ohio Senate Bill 3, drug sentencing reform:

“Senate Bill 3 offers a conservative, cost-saving, safe approach to drug sentencing reform and improving Ohio’s criminal justice system. It is tough on drug trafficking criminals, smart on crime, and soft on taxpayers.

“This is a huge opportunity for Ohio legislators to pass needed reforms to a system that is simply not working for anyone. It’s not working for addicts who are dying from overdoses, or taxpayers who are footing a massive bill to incarcerate people who are not a public safety threat and have only hurt themselves.

“Do not fall for misguided and inaccurate smokescreens meant to derail this needed legislation. This bill follows the proven example of states like Texas, which years ago passed similar reforms, saving taxpayers’ hard-earned money, and achieving all-time lows in crime rates.

“Improving public safety, giving addicts a chance to get back on their feet, and saving Ohio taxpayers as much as $75 million per year, is a win across the board. That’s what Senate Bill 3 would do, and legislators should act decisively to approve it, and Governor DeWine should enthusiastically sign it.”
