Statement from Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist on recommendations released today by the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration:

“The task force recommendations released today are a huge step toward creating the more effective, efficient, and affordable criminal justice system Michigan communities and taxpayers deserve. Too many people are being put in jail, and staying there for too long, for bad reasons. This makes the state less safe, and the system more expensive. The task force proposals address the problem by focusing on addiction, mental health, just and speedy trials, and not ruining peoples’ lives when they commit a minor offense. Ending the practice of suspending peoples’ driver’s licenses over fines and fees is a particularly exciting recommendation. We look forward to being helpful as legislators get to work delivering the best version of these reforms.”
