In the lead up to primary contests and the November general election, candidates for federal and state office across the country are signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to oppose and vote against any legislation that would result in a net tax hike.
16 sitting governors have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, with Governors Glenn Youngkin (R-Va.), Greg Abbott (R-Texas), and Doug Ducey (R-Ariz.) the most recent to sign. That number is poised to increase this November, with Taxpayer Protection Pledge signing gubernatorial candidates like Rebecca Kleefisch on the ballot in Wisconsin and Paul LePage in Maine.
Paul LePage, if elected this November to once again become Maine’s governor, will increase the ranks of governors who have taken tax hikes off the table. LePage will also have help from an increasing number of Maine state legislators who have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in recent weeks.
Thanks to the leadership and hard work of Representative John Andrews, 53 state legislative candidates in Maine recently signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Of those 53 new Maine Pledge signers, 18 of them are incumbent legislators running for reelection.
“I am so excited to see the crop of candidates and incumbents who stepped up to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge this year in Maine. Signing their names to a written commitment to their constituents and the taxpayers of Maine to not raise taxes sets them apart from anyone they run against this Fall.”
Looking at the federal level, there are currently 180 Pledge signers in the U.S. House and 44 Pledge signers in the U.S. Senate. 85% percent of all congressional Republicans have made the written commitment to oppose higher taxes. In contrast, zero congressional Democrats have made that promise. More than 1,000 sitting state legislators have signed the pledge, a number that is poised to grow this fall, thanks in part to the efforts of taxpayer champions like Representative John Andrews in Maine.
