WASHINGTON – Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift announced she will veto the $1.4 billion tax package proposed by the Massachusetts House. Gov. Swift stated: "The best chance we have of addressing our fiscal problems while protecting the economy and our taxpayer\\\’s wallets is to explore all of our options, not just our tax-raising options."
The Massachusetts legislature had proposed either stalling or halting the rollback in income tax rates, from the current 5.9% to 5.0%, to compensate for a budget shortfall. By refusing to allow House legislators to renege on their promise to the citizens of Massachusetts, Gov. Swift has sent a clear signal that the legislature must do its job to reduce the size of government and not force the taxpayers of Massachusetts to bail them out.
Gov. Swift\\\’s announcement shows that she puts the taxpayers of Massachusetts first.
