Letter: Gov. Phil Murphy Can Sign Pledge to Put 'No Tax' Promise In Writing

October 5, 2021

The Honorable Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey

225 W. State St.

Trenton, NJ 08625

Re: Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Governor Murphy,

At the first gubernatorial debate, you said you were done raising taxes, stating, “I pledge to not raise taxes.”

This is a welcome improvement on your current term in office, during which your budgets called for multiple tax increases, leading to more than $2 billion in tax hikes enacted in just three years.

This record of increasing taxes may make New Jersey taxpayers and voters skeptical of your new no-tax promise. Fortunately, Americans for Tax Reform offers the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, an opportunity for candidates to make a written, public commitment to oppose tax hikes.

The pledge shows voters a candidate is making a serious commitment to not raise their taxes, rather than just saying they won’t in the heat of a campaign. Your opponent, Republican Jack Ciattarelli, has made this written commitment to New Jersey voters that he will not raise their taxes.

I have included a copy of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge with this letter, it can also be found online at ATR.org (https://www.atr.org/take-the-pledge).
