Every Democrat President over the last 30 years has pledged not to raise middle-class taxes, only to break that promise once safely in office. Kamala Harris will do the same.
Kamala Harris claims she will not raise any tax on any American earning less than $400,000 per year. The Harris pledge has no credibility, and she will break the pledge.
First, Harris has repeatedly vowed to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act “on day one.” Harris has never retracted these statements.
TCJA provided a 15 – 20 percent reduction in average tax liabilities for the Americans making under $99,000.
As noted even by NYT, Washington Post, CNN and many other left-leaning media outlets, TCJA gave most people a tax cut. Repealing TCJA would impose an across-the-board tax increase on the American people.
Second, as Vice President she has cast tie-breaking votes to impose tax increases on middle income households.
Third, Harris is now calling for $5 trillion in tax hikes, many of which will hit middle income households. She has also vowed to impose a carbon tax which would hit everyone. When media pointed out to her that it could increase costs on people, she replied: “That should never be the reason not to actually put a fee in, in particular a carbon fee.”
Fourth, the Biden-Harris IRS (the supersizing of the IRS is the result of her tie-breaking vote) is doing everything they can to define $400,000 in a way to maximize the number of households hit by tax increases and audits.
Fifth, Harris is refusing to adjust her tax pledge for inflation.
The Harris tax pledge is now worth only $332,383 in January 2021 dollars, according to the federal government’s BLS inflation calculator.
Harris would need to raise the threshold to $481,372 in today’s dollars to keep up her end of the deal. She refuses to do so.
Let’s take a look at how previous Democrat candidates broke their middle class tax pledges:
Clinton tax promise: Bill Clinton repeatedly promised not to raise middle class taxes during the 1992 election. Here is one example of this, during a debate:
“I will not raise taxes on the middle class to pay for these programs. If the money does not come in there to pay for these programs, we will cut other Government spending, or we will slow down the phase-in to the programs. I am not going to raise taxes on the middle class to pay for these programs.“
Once elected, Clinton quickly moved to break his pledge. He imposed a gas tax hike which hit everyone. He also tried to impose a national energy tax on everyone, known as the “BTU Tax.”
Obama tax promise: In 2008, Barack Obama made a similar pledge which he repeated at least 20 times.
“I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.”
But Obama passed the Affordable Care Act once elected which imposed a long list of tax increases, including at least seven new or higher taxes on middle income households.
Biden tax promise: Joe Biden as a Vice Presidential candidate in 2008 pledged not to raise taxes on Americans making less than $250,000, and as a Presidential candidate in 2020 stated:
“Nobody making under 400,000 bucks would have their taxes raised. Period.”
Once elected, even the liberal Tax Policy Center found 20 – 30 percent of middle-income households would pay more taxes in 2022 as a result of President Biden’s Build Back Better plan.
Fool me once with Bill Clinton, shame on you. Fool me twice with Barack Obama, again with Joe Biden, and now Kamala Harris – shame on me.
