Gang of 14 Leader Supports Up or Down Vote

Washington, DC- Since his first presidential campaign in 2000, President Bush has consistently said he will impose no litmus tests on judicial nominees, except whether or not the nominee will strictly interpret the Constitution. As the Left continue to play partisan political politics and gear up for “war” over the nomination, a leader of the “Gang of 14” has come out in full support of an up or down vote for the yet to be named nominee.

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) joined with 13 other Senators earlier this year to avoid implementation of the Constitutional Option to end liberals’ unprecedented filibusters of President Bush’s judicial nominees. Senator McCain, breaking with the majority of his party, helped broker the deal to end the impasse on some of President Bush’s qualified nominees

“During the campaign, President Bush said he will appoint judges who will strictly interpret the Constitution,” Senate McCain recently told an audience in Dallas, “Thinking anything else is either amnesia or ignorance… elections have consequences… whomever [President Bush] nominates deserves an up or down vote and no filibuster… an up or down vote is what we will have.”

Americans for Tax Reform has called on the Senate to meet its constitutional obligation and ensure a speedy confirmation process with an up or down vote on all judicial nominees.
