Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Peter Roskam is pushing for greater accountability and oversight in the IRS.

IRS employees waste over 500,000 hours each year on “union activities” said House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) on Wednesday.

As Roskam points out, this squandered an estimated $23.5 million in taxpayer funds, all while the IRS pleads poverty and makes excuses for not answering the phone.

According to Roskam, the agency is burning “time that could be used to answer an additional 2.3 million taxpayer calls per year.”

Chairman Roskam has led the push for greater accountability and transparency at the IRS. A package of legislation supported by the Chairman that will reign in out-of-control IRS bureaucrats will be voted on in the House of Representatives next week.

“Congressman Roskam is taking the fight to the IRS bureaucracy,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “Taxpayers should not have to pay the IRS twice, once to pay for IRS union bosses paid to do union work instead of their real jobs, and again on April 15.”
