July 6, 2022: The New York Times broke the story that the IRS performed invasive audits on both James Comey and Andrew McCabe.

July 7, 2022: IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig (a Trump appointee) immediately calls for an investigation. As reported by the NYT, “‘The IRS has referred the matter to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration,’ the agency said in a written statement (emailed to reporters, not publicly available), adding that Mr. Rettig had ‘personally reached out’ to the inspector general’s office after learning about the audits.”

July 7, 2022: White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refuses to say if Biden has confidence in Rettig.

November 29, 2022: Less than five months after the start of the investigation (relative lightning speed for TIGTA) the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration publishes a report concluding the Comey – McCabe audits were essentially a coincidence, stating the audit process “did not include malicious code that would force the selection of taxpayers for an NRP audit.”

March 9, 2023: Matt Taibbi testifies to House Subcommittee on Weaponization of the Federal Government.

March 27, 2023: Weaponization committee chairman Jim Jordan reveals in a letter that the IRS conducted an “unannounced and unprompted” visit to the home of Matt Taibbi on March 9, the very same day he was testifying about government abuse.

March 29, 2023: In testimony, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen tells congress she is unaware of the IRS visit to the home of Taibbi.

March 29, 2023: The Biden administration’s John Kirby declines to comment on the IRS visit to Taibbi and tells reporters to check with the IRS.

As of now, the IRS has not publicly requested an investigation.

Congressman Jordan has asked the IRS to provide all documents and communications related to the IRS visit to Taibbi’s home.

Jordan set a deadline of April 10, two days ago. Time will tell if the IRS cooperated.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel is scheduled to testify before the Senate Finance Committee on April 19, the day after Tax Day 2023.
