Michigan Republicans recently celebrated the fiscal responsibility of past leadership. A 2015 law passed by Michigan Republicans automatically lowered the state income tax if the state general funds revenue increases at a rate greater than inflation.

Revenue totals show for this year that Michigan should automatically reduce the income tax rate from 4.25 to 4%. However, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Democrats in the state legislature instead have other plans.

Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, released the following statement as Democrats in Lansing plot to spend millions of dollars in corporate welfare instead of giving working households income tax relief:

As state legislatures and governors across the country work to cut income taxes, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Democrats seek to do the opposite. Their tax hike plan prioritizing corporate welfare over income tax relief will be a disaster for working families. The government should not be in the business of subsidizing its friends and campaign contributors and taxing everyone else in Michigan to finance that subsidy.  Michiganders deserve immediate tax relief–not a government that raises their taxes to fill a slush fund for Gretchen Whitmer’s friends.” – Grover Norquist
