The Federal Communication Commission’s plan to reclassify broadband Internet as a Title II telecommunication service is being painted as a surefire gateway to Net Neutrality. Already, 37 republican senators and at least 171 republican representatives have publically opposed the FCC. In the past few days, however, more opposition against the FCC’s attempts has surfaced.
First, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), urged FCC chairman Julius Genachowski to reconsider his ploy to have the FCC increase its regulation by adding broadband to its authority. Stabenow, along with 76 other Democrats in both the Senate and House of Representatives, oppose Genachowski and believe he needs to abandon his Internet regulatory efforts.
Within the FCC itself, Republican commissioner Meredith Baker also opposes Genachowski’s plan. She believes that Genachowski is only supporting this reclassification in attempts to usher in Net Neutrality policy. She also supports the technical advisory group which is aiming to find an inter-industry solution to Net Neutrality rule-making.
