ATR president Grover Norquist wrote the following letter to Rep. Stivers:
On behalf of Americans for Tax Reform, I am excited to endorse H.R. 2214, the Debt Elimination By Tax-Deductible (DEBT) Contribution Act. Your bill simplifies the previously convoluted process of making voluntary donations to pay off the national debt. It also clarifies that these will be treated as charitable contributions – and therefore be made tax deductable.
H.R. 2214 will ensure that payments to the Treasury are specifically used for paying off the debt and not redirected to some other form of government waste or over-spending. In addition to much needed spending cuts and tax reform, this type of legislation will go a long way toward getting America’s fiscal house in order.
The DEBT Contribution Act should be welcomed by our friends on the left who advocate on behalf of higher taxes. Instead of raising taxes on American families and small businesses, however, H.R. 2214 allows for these individuals to give the government as much of their own money as they want – a truly fair compromise.
Those Americans who choose to atone for Washington’s spending addiction by contributing more than their own tax liability should be able to pay off the debt with ease. The DEBT Contribution Act provides a clear, user-friendly avenue to do just that.
