On Thursday President Trump will be hosting a campaign rally in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where residents are raking in the benefits of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, signed into law by Trump.

Thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

Households earning the average income of $75,342 received an average tax cut of around $1,429, according to a report by the Tax Foundation.

Doubled child tax credit: 412,780 Minnesota households are benefiting from the TCJA’s doubling of the child tax credit.

Standard deduction: 1,777,460 Minnesota households are benefiting from the TCJA’s doubling of the standard deduction.

Obamacare individual mandate tax relief: 68,060 Minnesota households are benefiting from the TCJA’s elimination of the Obamacare individual mandate tax. Most households hit with this tax made less than $50,000 per year.

Lower utility bills: As a direct result of the TCJA’s corporate rate cut, Minnesotans are paying lower utility bills. Lower electric, water, and gas bills help households each month, and also help small businesses operating on slim profit margins. Minnesota examples of utilities passing on tax savings to customers include – but are not limited to – Minnesota Power, Otter Tail Power CoNorthern States Power, and Xcel Energy Minnesota.

Thanks to the TCJA’s corporate tax rate cut – from 35 percent to 21 percent – and the TCJA’s 20 percent tax cut for small businesses, employers of all sizes are hiring, expanding, increasing pay and benefits, and paying special tax-cut bonuses:

Industrial Weldors & Machinists (Duluth, Minnesota) - Investing in employee pensions, hiring new employees:

“This is an American success story of generations,” Pence said of IWM, a third-generation family business that gets 70 percent of its work by rebuilding massive rock crushers used to extract taconite iron ore on the Iron Range.

Trump tax cuts helped the business and its employees, Pence said — including thousands of dollars in investments by the company into IWM employee pensions earlier this year.

“That’s what it’s all about,” Pence said.

It was an easy fact to check after the vice president’s remarks. All four sibling owners of the company were on hand — Dawn Bergh and her brothers Rick, Rob and Randy Abernethy. Bergh confirmed the pension investments for the company’s 32 employees.

“The boilermakers’ pension is in the toilet,” Bergh said. “They’re worried about it. We wanted to give them something that would keep them around. It’s really hard to get employees. We’re hiring right now for both a welder and a machinist.” - August 8, 2018, Twin Cities Pioneer Press article excerpt

3M Company (Maplewood, Minnesota) – the company increased employee pension contributions by $600 million:

3M said its tax rate under the new "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act" will fall to 20 percent to 22 percent in 2018, down from a prior rate of 26 percent to 27 percent. Executives said they will use the savings to boost returns for shareholders, increase pension reserves and to invest in the company. – Jan. 25, 2018 Star Tribune article excerpt

In 2017, free cash flow conversion was impacted by enactment of the TCJA, along with an additional U.S. pension contribution of $600 million that 3M made following the signing of tax reform. – 3M Annual Report for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2018

Priority Courier Experts (St. Paul, Minnesota) – tax reform bonuses were given on Jan. 2, 2018 to employees; further, employees will receive another $500 bonus in 2018 on the anniversary of their hire date:

Priority Courier Experts paid a “TRUMP BUMP” to each of its 80 employees on their January 2nd, 2018 paycheck. We also expanded the “TRUMP BUMP” to pay each employee a $500 bonus on their hire anniversary date in 2018, and our hope for the future is to make the “TRUMP BUMP” Bonus permanent. – Steve Cossack, Founder/CEO, Priority Courier Experts

Minnesota Power (Duluth, Minnesota) – the utility will pass tax cut savings to customers:

"When final rates go into effect late this year, customers will start receiving a 1.5259% credit on their monthly bill through a new line item, called the tax cut rider, totaling about $10 million a year refund until our next rate case," Rutledge said.

For a $100 power bill, that's about $1.53 returned -Aug 10, 2018, Duluth News Tribune article excerpt

Circuit Interruption Technology Inc. -- CIT Relay & Switch(Rogers, Minnesota) – One week of extra pay added to final 2017 paycheck; hiring of new employees, growing the staff by 10 percent:

Circuit Interruption Technology Inc. dba CIT Relay & Switch manufactures and distributes electromechanical relays and switches to the electronics, security, HVAC, appliance and automotive industries. Employees were notified just before Christmas of one extra week pay added to their final year end check as a result of the new tax reform measure.Due to the positive atmosphere created by the passage of the tax bill Company profit sharing combined with normal 401K contributions amounted to an additional 5% per employee for 2017. CIT has added 10% to our staff thus far in January 2018 and more additions are expected. – Rick Hampton, CIT Relay & Switch

Albert Lea Public Warehouse (Albert Lea, Minnesota) – $2,000 bonuses for all 12 employees:

Albert Lea business leaders said the recently passed tax bill is helping them invest in their organizations.

The tax bill passed in December cut the top federal tax rate to 21 percent from 35 percent, likely putting billions of dollars in the pockets of major Minnesota companies.

Albert Lea Public Warehouse Owner Al Larson gave each of his 12 employees a $2,000 bonus, which he said would not have been possible without reduced rates. He said he decided to pay the bonuses in January to help the workers pay off costs incurred during the Christmas season.

“I just distributed it back to them,” he said.

In addition to bonuses, Larson is installing two roofs and investing in new dock levelers.

Larson said he prefers investing company revenue locally instead of contributing more percentage to the federal government. – Jan. 30 Albert Lea Tribune article

Otter Tail Power Co. (Fergus Falls, Minnesota) – the utility will pass along tax reform savings to customers.

Koch Companies Inc. (Minneapolis, Minnesota) – increased driver wages; increased sign on bonuses:

Raised driver pay to 41 cents to 45 cents per mile and the maximum sign-on bonus to $7,000 from $5,000 prior to late December.

“Rate increases and benefits from the recent tax law reform have allowed us to re-evaluate our current driver pay to make sure we are putting money back in the pockets of our greatest asset — the driver,” CEO Randy Koch said – Feb. 12 2018, Transport Topics article excerpt

Xcel Energy Minnesota (Minnesota) - The utility will pass tax cut savings along to customers:

About six months ago, Xcel Energy announced its Minnesota customers would receive a rebate because of a federal tax cut. In Minnesota, $200 million was returned to customers through a one-time credit on their bills. A typical Minnesota electricity customer who pays $85 to $90 a month received a credit of about $45. – February 8, 2019, Inforum article excerpt

U.S. Bancorp (Minneapolis, Minnesota) – $1,000 bonuses for 60,000 employees; base wage hike to $15 per hour; $150 million charitable contributions:

“We believe that tax reform is positive for the U.S. economy because it provides an immediate opportunity to benefit our employees, our communities and our customers.” – Andy Cecere, President and CEO

Northern States Power (Minneapolis, Minnesota) – The utility will pass along tax cut savings to customers:

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today approved settlement agreements with seven utilities to pass on to ratepayers their savings from the federal tax law rewrite, beginning in July. Three other utilities had no impact from the changes.

Filings were approved for Alpena Power Co., DTE Gas Co., Michigan Gas Utilities Corp., Northern States Power, SEMCO Energy Gas Co., and Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corp. (UMERC).

---

"Through swift action by the Commission, Michigan ratepayers will experience millions of dollars in refunds on their utility bills starting this summer due to changes in federal corporate income taxes," said Sally Talberg, chairman of the MPSC. “Utilities are benefiting from the tax cuts and their customers should, too.” – May 30, 2018 LARA Public Service Commission Press Release excerpts

Bio-Techne (Minneapolis, Minnesota) -- $500 bonuses for all 1,650+ employees:

Many of you, particularly in the U.S., have probably been keeping up with the news the past few months on U.S. tax reform. With the passage of the bill in Congress yesterday and the President’s signature, the new tax law is now official. How does this affect our company? A lot. Our current corporate income tax levels average between 29% and 31%. With this new tax law, over the next year our tax rates will drop to levels potentially as low as 21%. We don’t know the total answer yet because the law is complicated, and includes tax calculations from other countries where we do business as well. What I can tell you is that we are likely to pay substantially less taxes in the U.S. and overall.

There has been extensive media coverage here in the U.S. on what companies will do with these gains. The U.S. Government’s primary goal for the new law is that companies will use the additional monies to invest in growth, and not simply to benefit shareholders through a dividend increase or share buyback. I am happy to tell you that we will use the savings to invest in our company and in you. We will use the funds to continue our investment in the company through expansion and acquisitions. But we also want to invest in our employees. Our board of directors has approved a recommendation to pay a bonus of US $500 to every employee globally. The bonus will be paid to all employees employed as of December 31, 2017 (other than the Corporate Leadership Team) and will be included in a January 2018 payroll.  Management and the Board value each of you and your contributions, and this bonus is one way we wish to show our appreciation for your contributions to our strong business performance and excellent execution.

I look forward to working with all of you to create great future of continued growth for Bio-Techne.  On behalf of the entire management team, thank you. – Dec. 21, 2017 special message to employees from Bio-Techne CEO Chuck Kummeth

In all, more than 100,000 of Best Buy’s 125,000 employees in the U.S., Mexico and Canada are slated to receive the extra payouts.

In addition, Best Buy is making a one-time contribution of $20 million to the Best Buy Foundation to help further expand its teen tech centers and Geek Squad Academies across the U.S.

VIDEO: Warren Keeps Dodging the Middle Class Tax Question

Elizabeth Warren once again dodged the middle class tax question and refused to say whether her Medicare for All plan will raise taxes on the middle class during a Service Employees International Union forum on Friday, according to a video by Zak Hudak.

Reporter: “Will your healthcare plan raise taxes on the middle class?

Warren: Dodge

This is at least the 17th time Warren has dodged the middle class tax question.

Warren is avoiding the reality that middle-class Americans would have to pay more in taxes -- as Bernie Sanders notes is necessary -- to fund “Medicare for All.”

"Yeah, [we'd have to] raise taxes on the middle class," Sanders told a CNN reporter after the July debate.

Warren repeatedly dodged the question in September during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. An exasperated Colbert tried to offer advice about the "taxes that perhaps you're not mentioning."

In July, Warren got into a heated exchange with MSNBC's Chris Matthews while refusing to answer Matthews' question on middle class tax hikes. She also dodged the question during the CNN and ABC debates.

In POLITICO Jeff Greenfield noted that Warren could be holding back an admission that Medicare for All will lead to higher taxes for the middle-class because she is worried about losing voters.

Greenfield wrote:

This leaves an obvious question that will follow her through the campaign: “Bernie Sanders is frank enough to acknowledge the obvious, and then explain it. Why won’t you?” The answer may be as simple as: If you say you will raise middle class taxes, an unmeasurable but likely significant number of voters simply will not bother to wait for the rest of your explanation.

As ATR noted earlier, Medicare for All would require anywhere from $32 trillion and $36 trillion in higher taxes over the course of the next decade.

Warren Proposes “Lobbying Tax”

Elizabeth Warren to Impose “Lobbying Tax” on Americans Exercising their Constitutional Rights

The First Amendment guarantees the right to “petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” But Elizabeth Warren called for a federal tax on lobbying Wednesday, with the intent to “end lobbying as we know it.”

She then wants to take the tax money and have the government use it to lobby against Americans who dare challenge the government’s actions.

“My plan also calls for something unique — a new tax on excessive lobbying that applies to every corporation and trade organization that spends over $500,000 per year lobbying our government,” Warren wrote.

This is how Warren plans on structuring the tax:

  • 35% tax on every dollar between $500,000 and $1 million spent on lobbying.
  • 60% tax on every dollar above $1 million spent on lobbying.
  • 75% tax on every dollar above $5 million spent on lobbying.

This is where it gets even worse:

“Every dollar raised by the lobbying tax will be placed into a new Lobbying Defense Trust Fund dedicated to directing a surge of resources to Congress and federal agencies to fight back against the effort to bury public interest actions by the government.”

In other words, if you dare lobby against anything the Warren administration does, your own tax money will be used to fight against you, with the full might of the federal government.

Elizabeth Warren has found one more thing to tax in addition your income, energy use, life savings, IRA, and 401k,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “She would impose a tax on Americans who petition their government for more freedom. To avoid the unconstitutional stench of this idea, she calls these petitioners "lobbyists" rather than American citizens. Warren would tax ‘lobbyists’ asking for less government and she promises to spend that tax money paying lobbyists she likes -- maybe government workers -- to lobby for more government. Maybe Hunter Biden can get a job lobbying against this tax.

Biden: “I’m Gonna Double the Capital Gains Rate to 40%”

Joe Biden said he’d like to raise the capital gains rate to 40%, doubling the current rate of 20%.

I’m gonna double the capital gains rate to 40 percent,” Biden said in Nevada on Friday.

Since the launch of his presidential campaign, Biden has repeatedly said the capital gains tax was “too low.” Biden’s comments and his long Senate voting record mean voters should expect him to push for capital gains tax hikes if elected.

During his time in the Senate, Biden consistently voted against tax cuts on capital gains.

In 2003, Biden voted against the reduction in the capital gains rate from 20 percent to 15 percent. In 2005 and 2006, Biden voted against extending the 15 percent rate.

In 2012, then-Vice President Biden and President Obama insisted the cap gains rate revert to 20 percent.

Biden and Obama had already piled on another 3.8 percent capital gains tax hike -- the Net Income Investment Tax -- one of the many tax increases in Obamacare. The 3.8 percent tax hike took effect Jan. 1, 2013.

Increasing the capital gains tax burden would harm Americans’ ability to build a nest egg and hurt the value of their homes, farms, and businesses.

Currently, long-term capital gains are taxed at zero percent, 15 percent, or 20 percent, depending on household income level the year the gain was realized. Households subject to Obamacare’s 3.8 percent Net Income Investment Tax pay a 23.8% rate.

In August Biden called for a capital gains tax rate increase to 39.6 percent. If Biden is elected and raises the rate to his most recently stated 40 percent, the top capital gains tax rate would end up at 43.8 percent.

Bernie Sanders said in an interview with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night that all income over $29k would be taxed in order to pay for his Medicare for All plan.

Sanders: “Is healthcare free? No, it is not. So what we do is exempt the first $29,000 of a person’s income. You make less $29,000, you pay nothing in taxes. Above that, in a progressive way, with the wealthiest people paying the largest percentage, people do pay more in taxes.

This isn’t the first time that Sanders has openly admitted that the middle class will pay more in taxes, as Americans for Tax Reform has pointed out

You’re going to pay more in taxes,”  Sanders said during a Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on April 15 . At the same town hall he said, “Are people going to pay more in taxes? Yes.

And yes, we have to raise individual tax substantially higher than they are today,” Sanders said during an interview with Jake Tapper on July 5, 2015.

On a separate CNN townhall hosted by Chris Cuomo in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 25, 2016, Sanders promised that “yes, we will raise taxes, yes we will.

During another CNN interview, Sanders also claimed that Americans would be “delighted to pay more in taxes.

Elizabeth Warren has dodged the middle class tax question once again, this time dodging the question three times in a row during an interview with NBC.

NBC Reporter: “One of the things that a few of your opponents were talking about late last week really, was this idea of middle class taxes and healthcare. So yes or no, should middle class Americans expect their taxes to go up under a Medicare for All system?

Warren: Dodge

NBC Reporter: “But that’s not the same as taxes not going up.

Warren: Dodge

NBC Reporter: “So do you think then that Americans are willing to pay a little bit more in taxes if in generally the household costs are going down on healthcare?

Warren: Dodge

This is at least the eighth time Warren has dodged the middle class tax question.

Warren repeatedly dodged the question last week during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Joe Biden said he would eliminate the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act if elected, during a town hall in Iowa on Friday.

“What I’d be focusing on is eliminating the $1.9 trillion tax cut that [Trump] passed,” Biden said in Cedar Rapids.

Biden’s promise to repeal the tax cuts is a promise to raise taxes. If the tax cuts were repealed:

  • A family of four earning the median income of $73,000 would see a $2,000 tax increase.
  • A single parent (with one child) making $41,000 would see a $1,300 tax increase.
  • Millions of low and middle-income households would be stuck paying the Obamacare individual mandate tax.
  • Utility bills would go up in all 50 states as a direct result of the corporate income tax increase.
  • Small employers will face a tax increase due to the repeal of the 20% deduction for small business income.
  • The USA would have the highest corporate income tax rate in the developed world.
  • Taxes would rise in every state and every congressional district.
  • The Death Tax would ensnare more families and businesses.
  • The AMT would snap back to hit millions of households.
  • Millions of households would see their child tax credit cut in half.
  • Millions of households would see their standard deduction cut in half, adding to their tax complexity as they are forced to itemize their deductions and deal with the shoebox full of receipts on top of the refrigerator.

In Iowa, where Biden spoke, households who made the state average income of $58,570, received a tax cut of around $1,423.99, according to a recent Tax Foundation report.

Even left leaning news outlets confirm the good news about the GOP tax cuts:

CNN: “The facts are, most Americans got a tax cut.”

CNN: "In fact, estimates from both sides of the political spectrum show that the majority of people in the United States of America did receive a tax cut."

New York Times: "Most people got a tax cut."

Washington Post: “Most Americans received a tax cut.”

FactCheck.org: "Most people got some kind of tax cut in 2018 as a result of the law."

FactCheck.org: "The vast majority (82 percent) of middle-income earners — those with income between about $49,000 and $86,000 — received a tax cut that averaged about $1,050.

H&R Block: “The vast majority of people did get a tax cut.”

New York Times also noted the “sustained -- and misleading -- effort by liberal opponents of the law to brand it as a broad middle-class tax increase.”

In Biden's home state of Delaware, households making the average income of $62,852 received an average tax cut of around $1,422, according to a recent Tax Foundation report

Biden also lied to the American people when he ran for Vice President in 2008 when he repeatedly said he would not support any form of any tax that imposed even “one single penny” of tax increase on anyone making less than $250,000. Biden shattered that promise upon taking office.

Joe Biden slammed Elizabeth Warren for dodging the middle class tax question and said that her ‘Medicare for All’ plan would raise taxes.

"It’s going to cost a lot of money and she's going to raise people's taxes doing it," Biden said during a town hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Friday.

Responding to Biden, Warren dodged the question again and told a CNN reporter that "Giant corporations are going to see their costs go up. But costs, for middle class families, for working-class families, for the people that are squeezed so badly, are going to go down."

This is at least the seventh time Warren has dodged the middle class tax question.

Warren repeatedly dodged the question last week during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Elizabeth Warren keeps dodging the middle class tax question, and a video released today by Americans for Tax Reform shows even the establishment media is getting fed up with her evasive answers.

ATR president Grover Norquist said: "If Elizabeth Warren will not admit the obvious—that her wild spending will require broad-based tax hikes on the middle class, will she ever tell the truth in a general election?"

Joe Biden said he would end "Trump's tax cut for the top tenth of one percent," if elected, during the Workers Presidential Summit in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"If I'm president of the United States, you're going to see the end of Trump's tax cut for the top tenth of one percent. It's going to be done. Not a joke!" Biden said.

In the past, Biden has said he supports a full repeal of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

“First thing I’d do is repeal those Trump tax cuts,” Biden said during a speech in South Carolina in May.

Later, he said he would “eliminate most all of” the Trump tax cuts:

“By eliminating just a few of the tax cuts,” Biden said in Iowa, then added, “I’m going to eliminate most all of them. No, you think I'm joking? I'm not."

Biden’s most recent comment could be understood to say that the top one-tenth of one percent of income earners would see a tax increase. If so, this would amount to a promise not to raise taxes on anyone making less than $1.6 million per year.

In any case, Biden's promise to repeal the tax cuts is a promise to raise taxes. If the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was repealed:

  • A family of four earning the median income of $73,000 would see a $2,000 tax increase.
  • A single parent (with one child) making $41,000 would see a $1,300 tax increase.
  • Millions of low and middle income households would be stuck paying the Obamacare individual mandate tax.
