Americans for Tax Reform encourages all Members of Congress to vote “YES” on H.R. 1435, the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act.
The Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act, introduced by Rep. John Joyce (R-Penn.), would prevent President Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from allowing the state of California to ban gas-powered cars.
Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, issued the following statement in support of the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act:
“Bidenomics means taxing and banning the things people want to buy while subsidizing the things they don’t. Biden is attempting to outsource our national environmental policy to the state of California. This is a backdoor effort from Democrats to ban gas cars without Congress even voting. The Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act will put a stop to this madness and ensure that Americans can buy and drive the cars they actually want. Every lawmaker should support this bill.”
The Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act would amend the Clean Air Act to prohibit the EPA from issuing special waivers to states that would directly or indirectly limit the sale or use of gas-powered cars.
This legislation is a response from House Republicans to the California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) request in May that the Biden EPA approve its plan to require all new vehicles sold in the state by 2035 to be either electric or plug-in electric hybrids, a decision effectively banning the sale of new, internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035.
American consumers should be allowed to decide for themselves what car best suits their lives. Roughly 95 percent of cars on the road today are powered by gasoline. The average price of an electric vehicle was roughly $16,000 more than the average new car of any kind. The government should not mandate consumers buy unaffordable EVs that they would not buy on their own.
Americans for Tax Reform urges all Members of Congress to vote in favor of H.R. 1435.
