ATR President Grover Norquist, joined by 23 other leading free market organizations, today sent a letter urging President Trump to consider an executive order requiring full transparency of all scientific data used to justify new or pending federal regulations.

In the letter, ATR applauded the Trump administration for its admirable work repealing burdensome regulations that drain our resources and create a drag on our economy. However, further action is still needed. Too often, the justifications for new regulations are hidden from the public by concealing the scientific data behind them. If research is to become the basis for rules and laws that have a tremendous impact on our economy, it should be transparent, public verifiable, and reproducible. But all too often, it is not. Thus, we urge President Trump to address this situation with an executive order.

Specifically, ATR would support an executive order that requires all studies used to support all pending or new regulations and agency guidance must:

  • Be made public, including all methods and raw data on which the studies are based. And,
  • Be peer-reviewed – and thereby meet the scientific standard for verifiability.
