Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) congratulates Taxpayer Protection Pledge signers Rep. Greg Murphy and Dr. Joan Perry for advancing to the NC-03 GOP Primary Run-off, which will happen on July 9th.

Former Rep. Walter Jones’s unexpected death, shortly after his reelection, left North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District without representation. 17 Republicans filed for the primary in the special election which occurred yesterday, April 30th.

Dr. Murphy and Dr. Perry received 22.5% and 15.4% of the primary votes respectively. Since 30% is required to win the primary, both candidates advance to a run-off.

Taxpayers can rest easy knowing that both candidates (Murphy and Perry) made written commitments to the taxpayers of North Carolina to “oppose and vote against income tax hikes.” Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr and every Republican member of the North Carolina congressional delegation have also made the same commitment to voters.

Murphy is the only physician serving in the North Carolina General Assembly and currently the co-chair of the House Health Policy Committee.

Perry has served as a pediatrician in eastern Carolina for over thirty years, member of Pat McCrory’s Health and Human Services Transition Team, and appointed by Gov. Jim Martin to the North Carolina Day Care Commission.

Cook Political Report rates the district R+12, all but guaranteeing the winner of the GOP primary becomes the next Representative of NC-03.
