President Bush opens dialogue on fundamental tax reform
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Americans for Tax Reform, the nations leading taxpayer advocacy group, today applauded President Bush\’s creation of the Presidential Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform. The bi-partisan committee will be led by distinguished former U.S. Senators Connie Mack (Chairman) and John Breaux (Vice-Chairman) and will advise the administration on options to make the tax code simpler, fairer, and stronger. The creation of the Panel is a valuable step in the journey to a fundamental overhaul of the tax system.
"I applaud President Bush for creating the Presidential Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform," said ATR President Grover Norquist. "President Bush is bringing together a diverse and talented group of economic minds to have a deep and open dialogue on tax reform. The tremendous depth of experience throughout the council members will provide a firm foundation for an effective, attainable tax reform plan."
While excited about the mission of the Advisory Panel, ATR was quick to remind lawmakers that cutting taxes should still remain a top priority. President Bush and Congress have delivered American four tax cuts in four years, and ATR wants to see the pattern of annual tax cut packages continue. Tax cut legislation like permanent elimination of the death tax, Rep. Jerry Weller\’s (R-IL) legislation to immediately expense business investment, and Rep. Sam Johnson\’s (R-TX) bill to create Lifetime Savings Accounts (LSA\’s) will all be important bills in the 109th Congress that ATR strongly supports.
"Starting down the path to long-term fundamental tax reform is great, but lawmakers should also continue to fight for tax cuts now." continued Norquist. "President Bush and Congress should proceed with the established pattern of one tax cut package every year so America can continue to prosper and grow."
