Wounded Warriors Face New Tax This Independence Day
From John Kartch and Ryan Ellis on Friday, July 2, 2010 12:51 PMAs the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day with parades and barbecues, America’s veterans face a new tax on prosthetic limbs and other vital medical devices.
The health care overhaul passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama earlier this year contains a new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs, pacemakers, and wheelchairs. This tax, which its proponents claim will raise $20 billion over the next ten years, contains no exemption for the nation’s 22 million veterans. In fact, Senate Democrats specifically refused to exempt veterans from the tax.
On March 24 2010, Senate Democrats rejected an amendment offered by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) to the healthcare bill. This amendment (SA 3644) would have prevented the medical device tax from hitting veterans covered by the Veterans Healthcare Program or TRICARE for Life. This amendment was rejected by a vote of 44-54. All but five Democrat senators voted in favor of retaining the tax for veterans.
The medical device tax was one of over twenty new or higher taxes in President Barack Obama’s healthcare overhaul. This permanent new tax is being collected now.
“On March 24, Senate Democrats had the opportunity to exempt our veterans from Obamacare’s new tax on medical devices such as prosthetic limbs. But 54 Democrats voted against the measure. They chose to side with the tax-and-spend crowd in Washington over our wounded warriors,”said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “This is one of the many reasons Harry Reid and the Democrats did not want Americans to read the 2,500 page health care bill before it was passed.”
In addition to those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Department of Veterans Affairs reports the following number of veterans from America’s wars:
World War II: 2,079,000
Korean War: 2,507,000
Vietnam War: 7,569,000
Desert Shield/Storm: 2,254,000
The following senators voted for the tax:

I personally think that this is one of THE most reprehensible things this administration has done to date. These men and women were promised, when they signed on the dotted line, that their medical would be taken care of for the rest of their lives; this is just one more 'screw job' that they're being given. None of them asked to be injured while in service for their country, and they shouldn't be taxed on necessary medical equipment. It's patently obvious that this President has absolutely no respect for our military; look at all the pictures that have been taken of Obama doing his now infamous 'crotch salute'. He holds the highest office in the land, and doesn't have the first clue how to behave.

Everey day Obama does yet another thing to hurt our country or embarrass us that he is our so called, 'leader'. What he's pulling now is a horrible slap in the face to our military! The same military that is keeping his butt safe and protected. He's the worst POTUS in my lifetime and I find it hard to believe that he'll go down in history anything other than the worst of the worst! When he does his crotch salute, he may as well be flipping off our flag. WHAT MAKES THIS OKAY WITH THE REST OF THE NATION???? I just don't get it. Obama isn't qualified for the position he's in and every day he's making more decisions to weaken and ruin our country.

Discounting Veterans why should anyone needing medical equipment be taxed? People in wheelchairs or with prosthetics but not SEIU,etc? Obama is not a 'good guy' because he would exempt the vets. He called the veterans 'whinners' because of the outrage at him suggesting they pay for their own health care-free to illegals, exempt A.C.O.R.N., SEIU etc. Why not collect taxes from the bums in DC that haven't been paying? Geitner, Wrangel. Why aren't they being prosecuted for tax evasion as we would be? The whole Admin is rotten to the core. We should demand resignations-prosecute the crooks & reverse what damage we can.

It would be terrible - IF it were true, but it's not. Prosthetics and other devices required for treatment of combat-related injuries are paid for by the VA, not by the Veteran. We can't be taxed for things we don't buy. As a result, there is no basis for any tax on the vet. It's a bogus claim. This is just more smoke & mirrors - propaganda designed by the anti-Obama crowd to mislead us.

My impression of the bill is that they are going to send out notices (not unlike a 1099) to everyone and it will be added to their income. Again I am very angered by this bill! They can now try to put it into whatever words they want, but this is going to come back to bite our wounded military members in the A**! Does no one remember when he wanted our severely wounded to PAY for their own medical care? In my opinion he is going to make that happen one way or another!
>> Luana Schneider Sunday, July 11, 2010 7:19 AM Report Comment
When someone joins the military, they know the risks they are going to have to take. They are paid for the job that they do. Why are the tax payers obligated to them for the rest of their lives. Plenty of people do work in this country that assume risk. Highway workers, police officers, construction workers.. but if they are injured on the job Workman's comp has to pay for their injury, and disablity insurance has to pay for their disablity.

Relax, folks. THERE IS NO TRUTH WHATSOEVER TO THIS RUMOR. See below, from the government Web site: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/07/07/how-affordable-care-act-helps-veterans How Affordable Care Act Helps Veterans July 07, 2010 ... The latest rumor is the unfounded charge that “America's wounded warriors face a new tax on prosthetic limbs and other vital medical devices.” Nothing could be further from the truth. While the new law includes a tax on big medical device manufacturers, the tax won’t be passed on to veterans and WOUNDED ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY PERSONNEL AND VETERANS WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE PROSTHETIC DEVICES AT NO COST from the VA and TRICARE. Bravo, Tim! The dotgov site claims "the government" will pay. Pretty sure that is not the ruling elite digging into its own pockets [filled with taxpayer-earned dollars, out of which legislators vote themselves pay raises and other perks denied to those same taxpayers]. To claim the cost will not be passed along to the veteran overlooks the fact that veterans are part of the tax-burdened public. About time we take back "government of the people, by the people and for the people" instead of "...of...by...and for..." a ruling class elite. Our elected officials, aka "public SERVANTS" have their obligations spelled out in the US Constitution. Caring for those who have borne the heat of battle is a chief responsibility.

@ Shirley Why is someone anti-obama if they disagree with this? Funny how that is always the argument. This is yet another tax hike on the People. Sure it says the tax is to the manufacturer but they will just hike up there prices and pass it on to the consumer. This country is hanging onto a thread. Government is way to big and spending to recklessly. There solution to all this is to raise taxes rather then cut spending. This spending will be he downfall of this country.

Joe, where were you when W lied us into two unnecessary wars and cut taxes at the same time, which turned a healthy budget surplus into a $7 TRILLION deficit in 2009 through 2019? W charged everything he did to our children -- he didn't pay for a thing, including the Rx bill -- and that is why we're in the mess we are in today. See: http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3036
>> shirlee Thursday, July 22, 2010 10:51 PM Report Comment
Cutting taxes actually increases tax revenue (those in government know it, but for some strange reason the liberals fight it). Lower taxes encourage people, rather than discouraging them, to work more to better their own situation. When tax rates go up, where's the incentive to work oneself into a higher bracket? A person can actually work longer and harder and have less take home pay when that happens. Check it out. I recommend economists Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams, websites online.
>> 93rd Evac ANC Thursday, July 22, 2010 11:24 PM Report Comment
Get your head out of the sand. Eight years of Republican leadership just PROVED that cutting taxes does not work ... It's staring you right in the face. We lost 8 million jobs and gained a multi-trillion dollar deficit doing that! How you can say cutting taxes increases revenue after what we've just been through is unbelievable. It just shows once again that conservatives do not care about the facts.
>> shirlee Thursday, July 22, 2010 11:44 PM Report Comment
My recommendation to check the facts remains. You may have to alter your opinion after studying what economists know to be true. Perhaps you blame the tax rate cuts because you are unaware of the real cause for the economic mess we are now experiencing. Another site to check: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs This is excerpts from a hearing to investigate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and their illegal bookkeeping...from 2004. House cleaning (Senate, too) is long overdue, with such corruption at high levels.
