ATR Launches Virginia's Least Wanted Poster

When 34 Republican legislators worked with Virginia’s Democratic governor to secure passage of a record-breaking tax increase, they did more than deal a devastating blow to taxpayers in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Over the last fifty years, especially beginning with the presidency of Ronald Reagan, the Republican party has fought for a hard-won “brand” of lower taxes. Beginning from a place in the 1960s when the conservative standard bearer Barry Goldwater voted against John F. Kennedy’s tax cut, the modern Republican party has stood firm against tax increases in Congress since 1993.

Americans have begun to see a brand when they see the Republican party. Candidates can differ on a wide range of issues, but when voters look at their choices, they know that at least the Republicans are not going to raise their taxes, and the voters have shown their appreciation on election day.

When some of the biggest tax and spenders in Virginia turned out to be Republicans, they not only hurt Virginians in their pocketbooks. They also hurt Republicans nationwide who have carefully crafted a lower-tax brand over the last fifty years.
