State Legislative Advisory Project
Editorial: The State Legislative Advisory Project- Setting the Record Straight
(Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)
Since 2001, Americans for Tax Reform has encouraged state legislatures to take a leadership roll in national issues. For example in 2001, twenty-seven state legislative bodies passed resolutions endorsing Bush’s tax relief plan, then hand-delivered those resolutions to their Senators in Washington.
There are two advantages to be had from state legislatures joining in on national debates:
- First, it provides evidence of widespread support for an issue. It will be more difficult, for example, for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid to continue Daschle's tradition of denying votes on President Bush’s judicial nominees if Nevada’s legislature shows strong support for supporting President’ Bush’s nominees.
- Second, it provides a record for state legislators on national issues. If a state legislator decides he wants to run for reelection or for a higher office, not only does he have to defend his record on state issues, he’ll be forced to defend his record on national issues like tort reform or the Death Tax. This is especially helpful when state legislators seek federal office.
