There has been movement in the strike at the Crown Cork and Seal Plant, in Frederick County. The company management, federal mediators and union representatives have scheduled a meeting for July 23.

Mortgage lenders in the Winchester are say business has been booming due to low interest rates and the number of people refinancing. Last year, mortgage lenders did $1.5 Trillion in business, next year they expect twice as much.

The Josephine school Community Museum was dedicated Saturday. The former school was built in 1882 for black students during segregation. It is now considered a Virginia historical landmark.

The Virginia chapter of the AARP will ask candidates for contested seats in the general assembly to complete a survey. The group wants to know where candidates stand on issues such as perscription drug plans.

A Frederick County authorities are investigating a shooting that took place last evening at 106 Ward Avenue. At least one person was taken to the hospital. Police are looking for Donald Snipe, who lives at that address.

A national assessment of education progress in writing shows that Virginia 4th and 8th graders scored higher than the national average. The 4th graders scored four points higher, and the 8th graders, five points.

Officials at the Winchester Juvenile Dentention Facility estimate that the inmate population could either barely grow or double in the next five years. Currently, there are beds to spare.

Governer Mark Warner has told the State Tax Reform Commission that Virginia residents should pay their fair share of taxes and nothing more. He wants a new system that extends sales tax, revises income tax brackets, and examines local taxes.

TheToday is Cost of Government Day, when the average American has worked enough days to pay their share of government costs for the year. The author of the report says the day came 4.5 days later than the year before.

A new study indicates the DC area has more college educated adults than any other metropolitan region, besides San Fran Cisco. 42% of adults in the DC area have degrees, while the national average is 24%.
