I am not worried about myself or my family. I take no government money. I have planned for my retirement with my own money. Taxes can only be increased so much and I am able to avoid most of them. The only debt I currently have is a 1300 a month mortgage payment. If you get any income from any government body your free ride is over. The government is trimming health care co-payments and seeking other "savings," which is natural in these times. What was reduced was a portion of the national debt categorized as "Publicly held debt". This includes bonds, T bills, etc. The government cannot do much regarding these, as it is up to individuals and other entities to buy or cash in these "loans". All it boils down to is that more money was paid out to the holders of these instruments than was taken in by "selling" them.

People don't HAVE to buy tobacco or tan. Therefore they are choosing to participate in the tax. I am a nominal Democrat so I can vote in the local elections for those I like. I vote Republican in the national elections. Well, NY, (2) is the subject of numerous lawsuits that are at or will reach the Supreme Court, and is it possible that there are suits challening (1) as well. As a centrist the conservative Dems (save Joe Lieberman whose holdout killed the public option) with whom I tend to agree let us down terribly in not holding their ground against this monstrosity of a health insurance reform bill. They told us they would not vote for a bill that would increase the deficit and they did. Of course, the Republicans under Bush didn't exactly hold the purse strings very tight, did they?
