GUNNER DELAY, CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS,
SIGNER OF TAX PLEDGE

WASHINGTON - State Senator Gunner DeLay is a candidate running for the vacated 3rd Congressional District in Arkansas. DeLay signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) on June 15, 2001.

Pledge signers like Senator DeLay promise to "oppose any and all efforts" to increase taxes and to "oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates." ATR offers the Pledge to all candidates running for state and federal office. To date, President Bush, 212 members of the House of Representatives, 37 Senators, 9 Governors and over 1,200 state legislators have signed the Pledge.

At present Senator DeLay is the only primary candidate in the 3rd District race that has signed the Pledge against tax increases. "It is unfortunate that other candidates in this race have yet to take the initiative and sign the Pledge. Not signing indicates a willingness to raise taxes," said Damon Ansell, Vice President for Policy at ATR.

"Senator DeLay signing the Pledge demonstrates common sense and fiscal integrity. It is most regrettable that at this moment Gunner DeLay is the only one to have made such a commitment," Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, stated.

Americans for Tax Reform is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all federal and state tax increases.  For more information or to arrange an interview with Mr. Norquist please contact Christopher Butler at (202)785-0266 or by email at cbutler@atr.org.
