Hold Press Conference Denouncing
"Temporary" Tax Proposals
New
poll shows nearly 2/3 of Louisianans think more taxes unnecessary
WASHINGTON-
On Thursday, May 4, Americans for Tax Reform, along with state legislators
and state and local taxpayer groups, will hold a press conference
at the Louisiana state capitol at 2:00 P.M. central time to denounce
"temporary" tax proposals.
"Gov.
Foster signed our Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which states 'I, Mike
Foster, will oppose any and all efforts to raise taxes,'" said Grover
Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "Foster promised
the 4.3 million citizens of Louisiana that he would not raise their
taxes but he doesn't care about that now.
I have decided to come down here to remind him about it."
The
"temporary" tax proposals would increase the sales tax by one half
cent, increase taxes on beer and spirits by 25 percent, and increase
riverboat gaming taxes from 18.5 percent to 23.5 percent.
Results
from a recent poll conducted by Southern Media & Opinion Research
showed that almost 2/3rds of the registered voters in Louisiana thought
raising taxes was unnecessary.
