Pro-Taxpayer Candidates Triumph in Calif. Primary
20 Challengers, 19 Incumbents who signed "No New Taxes" Pledge win their primary races.

WASHINGTON - Taxpayers across California cheered today, when they learned that fully 39 candidates for Congress who signed a "No New Taxes" pledge won their primary races.

"California's primaries are a victory for taxpayers not only in California, but all across the country," said taxpayer advocate Grover Norquist, who heads Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) in Washington. "These candidates have a definitive advantage over their opponents on the issue of taxes, and will be difficult to beat come November. I encourage all candidates to sign a Pledge to their constituents to not raise taxes."

The 39 candidates listed below all signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform. The Pledge reads: "I will oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses." President George W. Bush, 7 governors, 37 U.S. Senators, 210 U.S. House members, and over 1,200 state and local officeholders nationwide have signed this pledge. The Pledge began at the founding of ATR by Grover Norquist in 1985. Thirty-three candidates running for state office in California also signed the pledge, including gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon.
