Social Security Fact of the Day
Social Security cannot afford to pay all of the benefits it has promised. Beginning in 2017, it will run cash deficits that get bigger every year.

Today marks the 100th “Social Security Fact of the Day.” In that time, there have been dozens of ideas, good and bad, shopped around to fix what everyone now acknowledges is an unsustainable system. Younger workers, if they are lucky enough to receive promised benefits, get a less than 1% rate of return on their Social Security tax dollars. The system is cash-poor in 2017, and goes bankrupt in 2041. Yet the Congressional Democrat leadership still has not put forward a plan. “Fact of the Day” wanted to give Democrats the opportunity to put something—anything—that fixes Social Security a platform here (see the blank box below). The invitation is open—but we’re not holding our breath.

The system has a problem, and we need to fix it. Personal accounts are the solution.
