Supreme Court Fact of the Day
Hearings shouldn't be a free soapbox for the Left's presidential candidates

The Presidential election may be three years away, but inside the beltway clamoring by Senate Democratic presidential hopefuls for media time is at an all time high. The Left will attempt to use upcoming Senate confirmation hearings as a means to apply their narrowly defined litmus tests on the nominee, and prospective presidential candidates will use the hearings for a little free air time.

Instead of using the hearings as a free TV news soapbox to launch their Presidential campaigns, Democratic senators should assess the nominee’s qualifications to serve on the Supreme Court.

While Moveon.org proclaims that, “the President has chosen a right wing corporate lawyer and ideologue for the nation's highest court instead of a judge who would protect the rights of the American people," Democratic senators with their eye on the White House should resist the temptation to adopt such rhetoric to get on the evening news, and behave as duly elected senators first, and presidential candidates second.

Americans for Tax Reform has called on the Senate to meet its constitutional obligation and ensure a speedy confirmation process with an up or down vote on all judicial nominees.
