Supreme Court Fact of the Day
Left's attacks on Roberts stem from laundry list of litmus tests

Almost immediately after President Bush announced his selection of John G. Roberts to succeed Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court, ultra-liberal groups from People for the American Way to the so-called Feminist Majority began their attacks on the nominee. Each based their attack on the nominee’s failure to pass a litmus test on that group’s pet issue. Conservatives, mindful of the founders’ intentions when creating the Supreme Court, have eschewed litmus tests in favor of calling for a nominee that will strictly interpret the Constitution.

Feminist Majority criticized Roberts because he wasn’t a “centrist woman.” Jesse Jackson called Roberts’ nomination an “insult,” because he wasn’t born female or Hispanic. NARAL has blasted Roberts because he wrote that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. MoveOn.org cited the same.

As predicted, the Left has sought to continue politicizing the courts by imposing single-issue litmus tests on nominees. Americans for Tax Reform has called for nominees who will strictly interpret the Constitution, and calls for an up-or-down vote in the U.S. Senate on Roberts’ nomination.
