President Bush: Working to Ease
Burden on Taxpayers
First 100 days show Bush doing what he promised
WASHINGTON Sunday, April 29,
2001, marked President George W. Bushs 100th day in office. The
President has made a concerted effort to secure tax relief for working
Americans who pay income taxes and is close to achieving his goal.
Grover Norquist, president of Americans
for Tax Reform, issued the following statement on the Presidents
first 100 days and his accomplishments during that period:
President Bush ran on a platform
of working with Congress, in a bipartisan fashion, to secure meaningful
tax relief for working Americans. Were just weeks away from realizing
that goal, and on behalf of all taxpayers, we want to thank him for
standing firm on his tax relief proposal.
Tax relief is coming for working
Americans, thanks to the Presidents strong and decisive leadership
on this issue.
When we consider that the likes
of Tom Daschle, Dick Gephardt, and Tom Harkin, who in the past never
met a tax increase they didnt like, now favor some form of tax
relief, its easy to see that the President has won this battle
because of his strong leadership.
But the Presidents accomplishments
dont end with imminent tax relief. He has begun to set a national
policy agenda on education reform to make certain that schools are held
more accountable and that the schools focus should be on results.
In addition, the President has
shown he understands the importance of foreign relations by already
meeting with 20 heads of state. Moreover, he handled the recent situation
with China with the deftness of a foreign policy veteran.
Lastly, the President understands
the importance of being visible and accessible to the people. He has
already visited 26 states in 21 days of travel during his term thus
far. Thats more than any other President this early in their terms
in history. This explains his positive poll numbers. 63 percent of those
surveyed in a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll approve of the job
President Bush is doing. Interestingly, 39 percent of Democrats approve
of the job hes doing. Clearly, his efforts to create a new tone
in Washington have worked, and a significant number of Democrats agree.
